Getting their open
The venue had been designed with the Dead in mind (which is why it resembles a Lightning Skull from above), and they were the planned openers. But Garcia's coma meant the slot went to Frampton/Nicks. They did go on to play it 39 times - once it was rebuilt for the methane leaks from the landfill below (up on the lawn section, dropped cigarettes would ignite flames). The canvas top was once the world's largest. The next show is better known, but this has a must-hear sequence, part of a second set with several fine moments.
First Set. An average set, GOGD, no aces, no trainwrecks, ranging from Bobby Slide Practice™ in Rooster, to a wonderful Me & My Uncle (though Bobby's guitar is buried here).
Second Set. China Cat is not unusual (Bobby's guitar is thin on the SBDs but better on the AUDs and the DVD), but Rider is astonishing in places. The energy gained is credit used for a fantastic Dewiminna. Jer is the strongest player but it's a boscage of spirals when you wade in. The year's best, capping a must-hear sequence. Jer is still fine, but a few others are not on top of it for Ship. There is a superb beam episode during a big Drums>Space excursion. There are better versions of Watchtower from the era (8/18), but one this good is always welcome. Dough Knees is nice in this slot, though this one is too tentative. Black Muddy is '87's standard encore [21 times].
1st Set: C+ 2nd Set: B-
Overall = 3¼ stars
I Know You Rider - astonishing in places
Man Smart (Woman Smarter) - caps a surprising sequence
Drums - great beam episode
Space - big excursion
SOURCES: The miller_121960 updates and fixes the pitch of the miller_83905. The 42580_sbd_bm_miller is the same, with slightly less quality. There's a great AUD (mk41_oade_jacobs_miller_clugston) and a fine MTX (43553_mtx_tobin). The 143555.5-1_tobin is a 5.1 surround folded back to stereo. The first three of the second set are in the All the Years Combine DVD box. The show is up on YouTube.

The people reviewing this show in other filesets are funny. This China Rider is a snoozer? None of them even noticed Bobby's guitar isn't working until halfway through the transition jam so I'm not sure how closely anyone was listening. Phil and Jerry make up for it by blazing their way through it. Phil in particular goes off. The Women is also a nice version though Brent kinda biffs his solo. As noted by others the Let It Grow is serious biznis.
First 3 songs were released in pro shot video/remastered audio on the DVD box set bonus disk

Let's give credit where credit is do. Another beauty of an upgraded show from CM for the masses to enjoy. Thank you for all the time you've invested into the shows on the Archives. The sound is pretty darn good for such a huge open air amphitheatre.
